LYT Remote

Remote Youth Theatre

LYT brings young people from across Lewisham together to make outstanding theatre. During Covid-19, young people experienced extended periods of social distancing. LYT wanted to ensure our participants could continue to connect, to deepen their creativity and to express their experience of this time. We started to deliver activities and events online…

See below for more about what we delivered
during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Remote Storytime, 3-8s & families

We held a Facebook live storytelling session for children ages 3 and up, and their families.

Junior Youth Theatre, 8-11’s

Our Juniors were rehearsing two plays about children taking matters into their own hands when lockdown started. They continued to rehearse online from April – May 2020.

Working with a designer and brilliant creative team, they explored how we could still tell these stories, even though we couldn’t be together. The groups filmed their scenes over video conferencing during the May half-term in 2020, sharing their work with friends and family. Watch shorts of their two performances: Cosimo and Space Girl.

Junior Youth Theatre, 12-14s

The Junior Youth Theatre Acting Company held their first digital performance in April 2020:

Playing My Part

was a live streamed event with pre-recorded video
showcasing scenes about youth activism and
the role that young people can play in changing their world.

You can still watch live on our Facebook Page
(You don’t need a Facebook account)

During the Summer term 2020:

The 12-14s Acting Company met online to develop spoken word pieces responding to their experiences of Covid-19 lockdown.

Technical Theatre, 12-17s

Not all drama happens on stage! Our technical theatre groups met online to learn more about backstage skills like lighting, sound, design, costumes and make-up. They also had a chance to meet professionals and take masterclasses in their own homes. Watch their video to find out what they got up to:

Senior Youth Theatre, 14-21s

Our Seniors met online to develop a creative response to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Young Touring Company, 16-24s

The Young Touring Company was on tour to Lewisham schools with their play Live It Down when the social distancing orders came into place. They put their thoughts about the experience into a digital story on Instagram.

Check out their story in highlights on our Instagram Page.

In July – August 2020, 16-24s were also able to learn new skills through
Playwriting Sessions with professional playwright Oladipo Agboluaje.
